1967 • VENETIAN GONDOLA

VENETIAN GONDOLA - 1967 More curves; this sketch of the prow and stern of a Venetian gondola captured, for me, all that I found delightful on my first 'grand tour'. My travels were neither grand, nor was it a tour, I was simply backpacking through Europe in the mid 1960s.

1967 • THE WINTER TRAIN TO BERGEN NORWAY

THE WINTER TRAIN TO BERGEN NORWAY - 1967 The train ride from Oslo to Bergen in Norway traverses the high country of the Norwegian peninsula. In winter, the countryside is buried in snow, and the only signs of habitation in the village of Haugastol, was the geometry of buried houses.

1967 • STAVE CHURCH OSLO NORWAY

STAVE CHURCH OSLO NORWAY - 1967 The Norsefolkemuseum in Oslo houses Norwegian vernacular buildings dating back to the 11th century. The stave church at Gol was acquired in 1881 by the Norwegian Society for the Preservation, and erected at the Norsefolkemuseum in Oslo. I have always been delighted in the details of vernacular buildings.

1967 • RESTAURANT IN LUCERNE SWITZERLAND

RESTAURANT IN LUCERNE SWITZERLAND - 1967 This is a quick sketch made during a brief sojourn in Lucerne Switzerland. The 'Messageries Maritimes' notepaper was carried with me across Europe. I had travelled to Marseilles from Sydney on the MM 'Caledonien', on its penultimate voyage.

1967 • PARC GUELL BARCELONA

PARC GUELL BARCELONA - 1967 The Parc Guell was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and was built in the years 1900 to 1914. The public park was designed to provide delight and rest in the centre of Barcelona, adjacent Gaudi's wonderful Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

1967 • GAUDI APARTMENTS BARCELONA

GAUDI APARTMENTS BARCELONA - 1967 The Casa Milà apartments were begun in 1905, and were designed by Antoni Gaudi, the great early C20th Spanish architect. These details from the roof apartments, and roof-top vents and chimneys illustrate the sensuousness of Gaudi’s architectural world.

1967 • FORT DE ST JOHN AVIGNON FRANCE

FORT DE ST JOHN AVIGNON FRANCE - 1967 The Tour des Masques, within the Fort Saint- André in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, in France, is located by the Rhône River. I loved the intricate stonework, and the luscious, sculpted interiors of the tower and the fort.

1967 • DEVIL’S BRIDGE TORCELLO VENETIAN LAGOON

DEVIL’S BRIDGE TORCELLO VENETIAN LAGOON - 1967 The Devil's Bridge, known as the Ponte del Diavolo, seen from the main canal in Torcello. The Messageries Maritimes onion-skin paper was becoming depleted, so I used it sparingly for special sketches.

1967 • CHIESA AUTOSTRADA DEL SOL

CHIESA AUTOSTRADA DEL SOL - 1967 The Chiesa Autostrada del Sol near Florence was built between 1960 and 1963, based on plans by the architect Giovanni Michelucci. The church commemorates the lives of those killed in building the Italian autostrada, and provides a reflective space for the traveller. The sculpted interiors are quite extraordinary.

1967 • CATHEDRAL IN TORCELLO VENETIAN LAGOON

CATHEDRAL IN TORCELLO VENETIAN LAGOON - 1967 These stone louvres were sketched at the C12th Byzantine cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, on the island of Torcello in the Venetian lagoon. The island of Torcello once held the largest population of the Republic of Venice.

1967 • AN OLD MAN IN HORGEN

AN OLD MAN IN HORGEN - 1967 Another moment of quiet in Switzerland, this time in a café in Horgen, a large town in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland, sited along the south bank of the Lake of Zurich. Horgen is now famous as an important Neolithic site in Europe.
